For most of us, spring is a time of renewal and looking forward to the warmer temperatures and longer days. While many focus on cleaning out those messy closets or garages, another focus should be estate planning documents that are collecting dust and hopefully tucked away in a home safe.
My rule of thumb is to encourage my clients to look at their current estate plans at least once every five years OR should a major life event occur such as death of a family member, divorce, or anything that could make an impact on the current estate plan. We do not have crystal balls so it is hard to anticipate what may occur in the future but we can pivot when the current plan no longer works.
Although estate plans are important to review, just as important are those incapacity documents you have as well such as powers of attorney and advance directives or POLST documents. You may have appointed an agent in one of these documents who is now incapacitated themselves or there has been a change in your relationship status with the agent.
We are here and ready to assist you in making any changes you may need or even if you have questions regarding your current estate and incapacity documents. Let’s sail into the summer with peace of mind and dreams of fun in the sun!
